The Social Media Detox

2/17/2020

Instagram likes might be gone forever? According to Adam Mosseri, he thinks taking away the likes on the site might be better for everyone's mental well being. For example, if a teen posts a picture on Instagram and has a lower amount of followers, he/she will not get as many likes on a post as a high creator (ex: Kardashians or famous celebrities) would. This can make someone feel insecure about themselves, which can lead to anxiety, sleep issues, and even depression.

Taking away likes on Social Media like Instagram will be permanent, though it has not happened yet. According to New York Times news, polls and didn’t tests are being taken by multiple people to vote for if this is necessary or not. Another example of how likes can affect a human being: what if an insecure teen posted a photograph they felt comfortable in, got few likes, then saw a photo-shopped and unrealistic picture of a girl, which got hundreds of thousands of likes. That could really hurt their self esteem.

This is a common issue which happens online. If likes are removed permanently, this may have a good effect on everyone on the online community. Hopefully doing this will also arise people from off their screens and eventually see the beauty of the real world, and not behind a screen. In conclusion, I agree that taking away the likes on all social media is a good break and detox and will help millions cope.
