My Trip To Merida

2/26/2019

Merida is located on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. I went to Merida with 6 other girls from my dance studio (Asheville Community Dance Theatre) because they have an exchange program with the Yucatan school of the arts which is in Merida.

It took us 14 hours to get to Merida,  from 1:40 am to 5:30 pm with a two hour time change. First, we drove from Asheville to Greenville, then we flew from Greenville to Atlanta. In Atlanta, we had an hour layover then we flew from Atlanta to Mexico City. Our last flight was from Mexico City to Merida and we were finally there. We then had to go buy hammocks because that was what we were sleeping in. After we bought hammocks we went back to the house, made dinner, and went to sleep

The first full day we went to a museum that showed Merida’s history and how it was founded. For dinner, we had street food and I had a cheese empanada and the best tacos I have ever had. Thursday was the first day we had dance class. We had a Martha Graham technique class from 3-5. This was difficult because at Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre we learn Limon technique. Also, the class was 2 hours long and at my studio, the classes are only 1 ½ hours long.

On Friday we woke up early so we could catch a bus and ride it an hour and a half out of Merida to get to the beach. The water was a beautiful dark blue and we went swimming for an hour. Then we took the bus back to the house and got ready for class. The dance class was another Martha Graham class from 7-9. We were all excited because the class was taught by Fanny who had come to Asheville and was an amazing teacher. The class was amazing because you could tell she really cared about our technique. Also, all of the classes were in Spanish. Then before we knew it we were halfway through our trip. The pictures are of the cenote and the ruins.
