The wildly popular web series “Stranger Things” is making its comeback this October. The first episode is set to premiere on October 27th. Season 1 of the series premiered on July 15th of 2016 on the Netflix platform and was met with an abundance of praise receiving ratings of 95%. The series also won the title of the Show of the Year by MTV Movie & TV Awards earlier this year.

Season 1 gave us a headfirst dive into a thrilling nostalgia filled drama. A tale set in 1983 in a fictional town known as Hawkins, Indiana and inspired by a time when science fiction novels captivated audiences. The show takes very obvious directorial inspiration from people such as Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King.

A quick recap of Season 1: (spoiler alert) A young boy goes missing into what is revealed to be an alternate reality known as The Upside Down.  A monster, dubbed the Demogorgon, resides in that reality came from the Hawkins Laboratory where a young girl who possesses psychokinetic powers by the name of Eleven also escaped from. Will’s friends and family begin conducting their own searches for him when they realize it’s not a normal disappearance. A body that resembles Will is found in the quarry by the water and everyone is ready to give up and try to accept his death, except for his mother, Joyce. She refuses to believe that her son is really dead as she believes she has been communicating with him through odd means ever since his disappearance. Her theories are proven correct when Chief Hopper discovers that the body is a fake. Throughout the time that Will has been gone, Eleven has used her powers to locate him and communicate with him. After discovering the fake body, Hopper knows that something is definitely not right and decides to sneak into the laboratory. While doing this he discovers the opening to the Upside Down. Meanwhile, Nancy and Jonathan, older siblings of Will and Mike, discover another opening in the woods. The different groups; the kids, the adults, and the teenagers, finally combine forces to defeat the monster. They create a makeshift sensory deprivation tank at the local middle school as it was revealed that Eleven would be able to find Will using her powers while submerged. After Eleven confirms that Will is still alive and hiding, plans to kill the monster are put into action. Joyce and Hopper attempt to break into the laboratory and enter the Upside Down that way but are caught. Jonathan and Nancy have another plan though. They plan to lure the monster to the Byers’ home and burn it. The plans seems to go perfectly, except the monster simply disappears so there was no way to be certain it was dead. The Demogorgon appears at the school and pursues a chase on the kids. To finally kill the monster, Eleven seemingly kills herself in the process. A small epilogue of a month later shows that although the Demogorgon is gone, Hawkins is still not safe.

To promote the new season, titles for all nine episodes have been revealed as well the as the appearance of new characters expected to play major roles.

Digital Trends give us an inside look of some of the many theories on what is to come next:

- A new monster is revealed in the season 2 trailer. Based on the silhouette that is shown, it is rumored to be a mix between a xenomorph and a giant spider creating a creature that all of mankind would fear. It is also believed after seeing the trailer that this monster has a connection to Will.

- Seeing as season 1 never clarified what exactly The Upside Down is, many have come up with their own ideas. Some believe that it exists only within Eleven’s mind while another popular theory states that The Upside is not an alternate world at all, it is the future. References to The Cold War are seen in the background of the plot so those who claim this second theory believe that a war between the US and the Soviet Union occurs at some point during the Stranger Things timeline which leaves the world in a destroyed state like the Upside Down.

- Many believe that Hopper’s young daughter was an experiment of the lab. In season one it is shown that Hopper had a wife and daughter at one point, but his daughter passed away very young. She developed a mysterious illness that caused her death, and this illness showed a few symptoms that could be related to her possessing powers such as Eleven’s.

-The way season 1 ended with Will Byers coughing up alien slugs from the Upside Down leaves people to believe that changes are coming for him. It is theorized that Will is still deeply connected to the Upside Down and may turn out to be the villain in the upcoming season seeing as Schnapp himself said he’d like to see the character take a darker turn.

Season 2 won’t be the end, Stranger Things has already been approved for a third and fourth season to come later. Fans have been anticipating to find out what happens in the streets of Hawkins next.
