No one is sure when donuts were invented but it may have been by Dutch settlers in the 1800s. The first donut recipe was found in 1800 calling them dow nuts. Dow nuts are their second name because they were originally called Olykoeks, oily cakes. Donut phrase was first used in 1800 and donut and was written in a news article of 1809. Donuts didn't always have a hole in them in 1847 Hanson Gregory poked a hole in them. Donuts were not brought up in history again until they became popular in world war one.
