Merida is located on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. I went to Merida with 6 other girls from my dance studio (Asheville Community Dance Theatre) because they have an exchange program with the Yucatan school of the arts which is in Merida.
It took us 14 hours to get to Merida, from 1:40 am to 5:30 pm with a two hour time change. First, we drove from Asheville to Greenville, then we flew from Greenville to Atlanta. In Atlanta, we had an hour layover then we flew from Atlanta to Mexico City. Our last flight was from Mexico City to Merida and we were finally there. We then had to go buy hammocks because that was what we were sleeping in. After we bought hammocks we went back to the house, made dinner, and went to sleep
The first full day we went to a museum that showed Merida’s history and how it was founded. For dinner, we had street food and I had a cheese empanada and the best tacos I have ever had. Thursday was the first day we had dance class. We had a Martha Graham technique class from 3-5. This was difficult because at Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre we learn Limon technique. Also, the class was 2 hours long and at my studio, the classes are only 1 ½ hours long.
On Friday we woke up early so we could catch a bus and ride it an hour and a half out of Merida to get to the beach. The water was a beautiful dark blue and we went swimming for an hour. Then we took the bus back to the house and got ready for class. The dance class was another Martha Graham class from 7-9. We were all excited because the class was taught by Fanny who had come to Asheville and was an amazing teacher. The class was amazing because you could tell she really cared about our technique. Also, all of the classes were in Spanish. Then before we knew it we were halfway through our trip. The pictures are of the cenote and the ruins.

Saving money can be hard when you are a kid. The key to saving money is setting a specific goal for yourself. Make smart decisions on spending money and look for ways to earn money in your free time. You probably aren't making a lot of money now but that doesn't matter, what matters is time. The power of a habit is almost as important as the power of time when it comes to money. If you start saving money now, you will continue to do that as a habit. Every dollar you get, whether it's a gift, an allowance, or pay from a job, get into the habit of saving a portion of it.
Make a savings plan by setting a goal for something you want to buy. It will be easier to save money with a set amount in your mind. This will help you stay on track with your goal. An example of this is maybe you want to buy airpods, your goal would be the price of the airpods. Another tip is keeping your money in a safe place, like a piggy bank or savings account. Put your money where it can't be stolen or lost. Keep it in the same place so you'll be less likely to forget where it is.
Saving money as a kid can be hard, especially if you have not yet developed the skills to make it in the working world. It can also be difficult, for example, if your friends are out buying new clothes at the mall. Wait 30 days before buying an item if it's not something you need. It’s easy to splurge and buy something on impulse. If you find yourself in this situation, force yourself to stop the purchase. If you start saving money now, that habit will stay with you. Start saving for the future while your future is way ahead of you!

Marvel studios are one of the most popular moviemaking studios. Marvel started in 1939 printing illustrated comic books created by Stan Lee. Their first ever movie, Blade, released in August 1998, made approximately 70 million dollars. Marvel movies now tend to make from 370 million dollars to over 1.5 billion dollars. Sadly, Stan Lee died last month at the age of 95, but Marvel is still coming out with great movies. Here is a list of Marvel’s upcoming movies, in no particular order.
Expected release date; March 8, 2019.
This movie will have Brie Larson starring as Captain Marvel, its first trailer was released in October. Captain Marvel is a superhero that Stan Lee and Gene Colan created in 1967 when Stan and Gene introduced an alien called Marvell in their comics. She was their first female superhero. Her powers consist of flight, superhuman strength, energy manipulation and she can absorb energy.
This movie was “leaked” in Avengers: Infinity War. In the after credits scene in Avengers: Infinity War, Nick Fury and Maria Hill are driving in an SUV and talking about the battle at Wakanda. All of a sudden, a car spins out in front of them. They check the car and notice there is no one in it. Then, out of nowhere, a helicopter crashes into a building. As people are freaking out and running around, Hill starts to disintegrate. The way he disintegrated was like how many other characters did before in the movie when Thanos snapped his fingers to wipe out almost all life in the universe. While Hill is disintegrating, Fury runs back into the car and grabs a pager from the back seat. He starts pressing a button on the pager, but then he also starts to disintegrate. After the pager drops on the floor, the camera zooms in on its screen, and a gold star pops up. Then blue and red colors, and the camera cuts to black. What does that mean though? One view of this is that it may mean that Fury was trying to send a message to Captain Marvel, which follows up to fans predicting Captain Marvel appearing in a movie soon. And they were right because, in March, We’re gonna see, maybe one of the most action-packed Marvel Movies ever!
Expected release date; May 3, 2019.
This movie is going to be a Marvel movie that doesn't really focus on one main character, it is going to have almost all the Marvel characters in it. Kind of like Infinity War. This movie’s name is actually not official yet, but everyone is calling it Avengers 4, as it is most likely to Marvel will be titling it that. There is not a lot that we know of this movie, but many people are believing that a lot of MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) characters stories will come to an end, because in Avengers: Infinity War many characters disintegrated. Those characters include Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, all the Guardians Of The Galaxy members except Rocket, and also Nick Fury. But nothing is proved, so maybe in Avengers 4, Marvel will bring back some of those beloved characters.
Avengers 4 started filming the same time as Infinity War; August 2018. Infinity War was released on April 2018, so it took them about 8 months to film Infinity War. But Avengers 4 is still being filmed, It’s has been being filmed for about a year and a half! So anyone can guess that this movie is going to be a hit, with all this editing and filming Marvel Studios is doing. what's great is that this movie is releasing only 2 months after Captain Marvel, so Marvel fans can get 2 of the most hyped movies releasing right around the same time.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
Expected release date; July 5, 2019.
What will this Spider-man: Homecoming sequel have for us? It will have action, comedy and an awesome villain, just like all other Spider-Man movies. But let’s dive deeper into the details, and look at what’s really going to happen in this movie.
First off, let’s look at his suit for this movie: Some leaked photos (to the right) from Instagram shows Peter’s new costume in this upcoming film. In the last Marvel movie based on just Spider-Man, his suit had a built-in robot that had many features and different modes. So, that means that we can only go up! This new black and white suit he is going to get will probably have some hard armor for that villain to have to break through. Speaking of villains, let’s look at the villain for this movie.
The villain in Spider-Man: Far From Home will be Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. According to The Hollywood Reporter; Gyllenhaal was disappointed and surprised when he heard he would be playing this supervillain, as he thought he would be playing the role of Spider-Man.
Overall, all the great actors and funny characters will lead up to an amazing movie! So this Summer, our favorite spider’s returning!
Unknown release date.
No one really knows when this movie is going to be released or who the villain will be because only about a week ago people knew this movie was going to come out. No one is certain what year it will get released in, but odds are; we’ll be watching this movie in late 2019. Shang-Chi is an Asian superhero that does not have a signature weapon (Not totally true, he does occasionally throw shurikens). Instead, he is trained in martial arts and has very strong fighting skills. Shang-Chi was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin back in 1973. A couple of years after that, he joins the Avengers and gets the power to multiply himself. He appeared in a couple movies but was not really noticed a lot after that. However, Marvel decided to have a movie that supports Asian culture, so they brought back the perfect hero for this movie. Even though Shang-Chi is Asian, Marvel will make this movie as non-racist as possible. According to Deadline.com, “The script will modernize the hero to avoid stereotypes that many comic characters of that era were saddled with.” This movie probably hasn't even started getting recorded yet, considering how little we know about this movie. But what we do know is that this movie will be awesome!
The New Mutants
Expected release date; August 2, 2019.
The New Mutants will be a movie about 5 young mutants held captive by a villain. That’s really all we know of the story. But here are some further details: The mutants names are Wolfsbane, Magik, Mirage, Sunspot, and Cannonball. They must learn about whoever is holding them hostage, and they also must learn about their powers/abilities. The thing that will make this movie really unique is its theme. It will be more “horror” than “action”. A couple factors to this theme include the setting (It was filmed in Medfield State Hospital) and the characters. Apparently, in the “hospital”, there are these weird faces that go through the walls ( Kind of like in Stranger Things). They are after the young mutants. What are they though? No one knows. Maybe it could be a villain. But for now, we’ll just have to wait for more teasers to come out! And if you like horror movies and superheroes, this movie is gonna be for you!
Overall, 2019 is going to be a pretty solid year for Marvel Studios. And this isn't even all the movies to watch. These are just 5 really good ones! If you want to look at more great movies to watch later, click right here. I personally can't wait for these amazing movies to come out, and I will really enjoy them!
Story by Rowyn Esslinger
It all started when I was born. I loved, loved, loved “boy clothes”. As soon as I could talk, I wanted to be a boy and wear boy clothes. I hated wearing dresses or anything girly. If I was going formal, I was going formal in style - meaning I was wearing a suit.
My mom was awesome on the first day of kindergarten, she let me wear bright yellow pants with a blue top! I felt like a king. My dad thought the other kids would laugh at me, but he was wrong. My mom didn't care; she thought I was gay, which was not completely wrong because I am pan which means I like people for their personality.
One day when I was 5, I had a babysitter and she was a photographer; she took pictures of us and it took 3 hours until she “convinced” me to wear a dress. It was terrible. I felt like something was choking my throat. It felt like I could not breathe, like I was in the wrong body. Which I am. I told my mom that my babysitter said my parents would be happy if I wore a dress. My mom said, ¨I don't care what you wear. You don't have to wear anything you don't want to.¨ I said "the babysitter made me wear those clothes". My mom said she understood, and that was not ok and that it should not have happened.
Back when I was little, every couple of years, and only for a few hours, I would try to wear more girl-like clothing. I called it "girl mode". I thought I was being me, but I was not. Once in 3rd grade, I walked into the girl's bathroom and we had a sub. The sub said in a mean voice, ¨Hey! Youŕe using the wrong bathroom.¨ I was not in the wrong bathroom. Back then, I still went by the name I was given at birth and I still used feminine pronouns. But, after that, I never used the bathroom ever again at school. I still don´t. I only go at my house or a restaurant. In general, the bathrooms are hard when you are transgender. Imagine always being worried that someone was going to tell you you are in the wrong bathroom. How would you feel?
The day I came out as transgender to my class, I was in 5th grade and I was so happy that day. I was also so very terrified. My mom told me to come outside with her for a moment, while Ms. Young was telling the class that I had something to share.
So when I walked out into the classroom, I saw all the support and love and kindness surrounding me. It was amazing. And Ms. Young said, ¨Are you ready?¨ I said yes. I walked to the front of the class, and all the people were following me like….my parents, my sister, my best friend Ella and my other best friend Gabi, their parents, and so many more. It felt like I was so important that people wanted to hear my voice.
I walked to the front of the room and said hi. My mom said he is transgender and going to explain. I shared about my new name, new pronouns, what transitioning would like for me, and my feelings. I explained that I would use puberty blockers and hormones to help my body develop in a way that matches my brain. And, I explained that it has felt like I have kept a lot bottled up, but that it was time to break the bottle and really be free. I also encouraged any of my friends who might feel like they are holding back parts of themselves to be brave and not to let anyone tell them not to be who they are. We should feel free to be free.
Now, if people didn´t know me before 5th grade, they don't know I am transgender. I am just a regular boy. And that is the story of
Spencer´s transgender journey.

Summer is most kids favorite season, mostly because there is no school. Instead of school, most kids go to the pool, hang out with friends, chill at home, and go to summer camps. However, having a summer schedule opposed to year-round causes an educational gap over the long summer stretch. It also causes a food gap for lots of children in poverty. 22 million children in the US receive free or reduce breakfasts and lunches from school, and lunches and breakfasts aren't offered over summer vacation. So, why do we even have summer vacation? Is it in the children living in America's best interest to steal summer from them? These are some questions I asked myself, and I found some shocking answers.
Over summer vacation, most kids don't do any academics, and if they do, it is usually a small amount. Not learning for the 10-11 week summer vacation causes what a lot of people call “ the summer slump”. The summer slump is caused by not learning, and forgetting most of what you learned the year before, so academically it is harder to start off the school year. Basically, summer is making you dumber, but having a year round school schedule could help fix that. The traditional summer vacation calendar is unbalanced, unlike the balanced year round schooling calendar. You can see this on the graphs from The Wild Cat Times.
“Supporters of the idea say they can stop a loss of learning and boost achievement,” says PBS News Hour on the topic of year-round schooling. Also, in the video, The Real Reason Why Children Get the Summer Off of School, Simon Whistler, said that, “ (Year-round school) will help students perform at the same academic level as students from other countries by allowing more hours of instruction.” The US doesn’t compare well with the rest of the world academically; the PISA did a study in 2012, involving 15-year-olds around the world, and they found that “the US ranked 36 out of most countries around the world on math scores in 2012.” The study also found that “one of the highest scoring states (in the US), Massachusetts scores were so low, it seemed they had 2 fewer years of mathematical education than the students in Shanghai (one of the highest scoring countries).” This information was shocking to me. How could our country compare so poorly to the rest of the world? A year-round school schedule could help students achieve more, and help the US rank higher academically.
Aside from school achievement, the home lives of children in poverty over the summer is taken over by hunger. “1 in 6 children in the United States face hunger,” says nonprofit, No Kid Hungry. No Kid Hungry also says that “more than 13 million children in the United States live in ‘food insecure’ homes.” This means that over the summer, without school breakfast and lunch, children are going hungry! This made me wonder, why was the opportunity for hungry kid’s to become even more hungery over the summer even a thought? The video, The Real Reason Why Children Get the Summer Off of School had some answers. Simon Whistler said that “summer break was created because of the lack of AC in the 1800’s, so upper class and wealthy families could vacation to their summer homes.” Yes, the rich from the 1800’s decided our school scheduling. Times have changed, but our scheduling hasn't. To adapt to that, non- profits try getting food out to kid’s who need it like Feeding America. But these non-profits aren’t helping nearly enough children. “… 22 million children receive free or reduced-priced meals through the National School Lunch Program. When school is out during the summer months, however, only 3.9 million receive free or reduced-price meals… ,” says Feeding America. Having a year-round school schedule would help reduce childhood hunger, and it wouldn’t affect the upper middle class/ wealthy families from the 1800’s, because AC was created in 1902.
What do you think, should summer fun be stolen for better academic results, and less children hungry over the long break?

People have all different tastes. Have you ever had a meal with your friend? If you have, then you may have noticed that your friend did not like what you were eating. Let's say you are having soup with your friend, you had tomato soup with potatoes in it, and your friend has just potato soup. You offer your friend some of your soup and your friend says “no”. “You have to like tomatoes because I like tomatoes everyone does right?” You say. “But I really don't like tomatoes,” your friend says in a plain voice. You can't understand this; you love tomatoes and potatoes, why does your friend only like potatoes? The answer to your question is in your DNA.
When you are born, your feelings are born to. Your feelings and tastes are different from other peoples because you are different. DNA is in everyone, it makes up your genes. Not the common blue jean, but your genes in the body. Amino acids go together to make proteins, these all go together to make up the way we act and the reasons we like and dislike things.
So, in conclusion, the reasons for likes and dislikes go deep within your DNA. Just to go over a little bit more, there are many reasons to why you have different likes and dislikes. So many pieces go into making you and that is why you are different from other people. You are like a recipe for cake or pie and you need that recipe so that you can be different.

Licking your Lips
Have you ever been outside on a cold, morning, and you notice your lips are dry, so you lick them? It turns out this only makes them worse! Here’s why: The saliva on your tongue and in your mouth evaporates really fast and when you lick your lips, that saliva evaporates, leaving your lips drier than they were before. Winds and harsh weather can also contribute to dry lips. Your lips have thinner skin than the rest of your body and they don’t have oil glands, both of which makes it easier to dry out.
Dos and Don'ts for dry lips
According to The Washington Post, don’t:

Biting Your Nails
Biting your nails is a common bad habit, and it can result in too-short nails that hurt. So why do we do it?
People bite their nails for a number of reasons, says WebMD. They could be stressed, worried, sad, insecure, or even just bored or hungry. A range of people bite nails too, such as little kids, teens, and adults, and studies show that if your parents bite their nails or if they did as a kid, their child will be likely to as well.
How do I stop?
Biting your nails doesn’t do anything good for you. According to WebMD, it can mess up the tissue around your nails and make them grow in with a weird shape. If you bite your nails a lot when you're not thinking about it, put socks over your hands whenever you're watching tv or reading. You can also get sick from biting your nails. Just imagine how many things your hands touch every day, and when you bite your nails, that bacteria has the chance to get into your mouth.
So next time you think about biting your nails or licking your lips, just think about what you’re really doing to yourself.
